In my opinion, addiction, mental health and poverty are all connected. A person may only start off struggling in one of these areas but without help and guidance the risk of falling further into all these areas goes up. Once this happens it all turns into a cycle of struggle and hardships. One may lose their sense of self as they go further in addiction, mental health and poverty. Things that can help prevent or lower the high risk behaviour of a lifestyle that people have who struggle with the above problems are having a community of supports who are non-judgmental, willing to listen and can provide the needed resources to deal with the things a person is struggling with. This will hopefully slowly help them find their sense of self and deal with the real issue solving everything else that follows it instead of only dealing with the things that don’t really matter in the long run.
